Important pilgrimage place visited by Pope John Paul II.
Velehrad - one of the most important pilgrimage place in the Czech Republic - is closely associated with St.Cyril and St.Methodius (10th century). They brought during their mission to Morava Christian faith, culture and Cyrilic alphabet. The cult of the Slavonic apostles, who are the patrons of Europe together with St.Benedictus, makes Velehrad the place of big importance even beyond the borders of the Czech Kingdom.
In 1985 at the 1100 years anniversary of St.Methodius death the Pope Jan Paul II donated the Golden Rose to the basilica (only a few cathedrals all over the world obtained this honour). In 1990, during his first visit to the Czech Republic, the Holy Father visited this place.
Architecture: The early medieval Cistercian abbey was founded in 1205. Today the monastery with the Church of the Assumption is a large Baroque complex with remains of Romanesque-Gothic buildings.
